When we first made the decision to change how our children were educated, we really worried about whether we were doing the right thing or not. We didn’t know anyone who homeschooled. We didn’t know anyone who used a virtual school. All we knew was that our children deserved something better.
We prayed — We talked —
We prayed — We researched —
We prayed —We decided —
and we prayed again.
It was a very difficult decision and one we did not take lightly. God showed us the best reasons to choose a virtual school for our family. A few of those reasons are listed below.
1.) An Outstanding Curriculum
The curriculum offered by our virtual school is very challenging — much more so than the local brick-and-mortar public school. All of the core subjects are covered in depth and are supplemented with many fabulous online resources, such as Brain Pop, Discovery Education, and Kahn Academy. The lessons also offer many different techniques to cater to a variety of learning styles. Our schedule is also peppered with electives, even in the elementary grades. My kindergartner is learning Spanish this year. My 5th grade daughter has taken American Sign Language, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.
2.) A Dedicated Staff: Click here to read more!
Our children have fantastic teachers who are thoroughly dedicated to the success of their students. They truly care about the kids! These teachers are available anytime the children (or parents 🙂 ) are struggling. They are available by phone, webmail, or LiveLesson. No question is too big; no concern too small.
3.) All Supplies Provided
Not only does our school provide us with a top-of-the-line curriculum and a wonderful staff, but they also send us the tools to help our children learn. We are supplied with a computer (and tech. support), text books, and workbooks. Math manipulatives, art products, and science kits are also provided; all at no cost to us!
4.) The Ability to Learn at Our Own Pace: Click here to read more!
All children learn differently. In a brick-and-mortar school, students are forced into a mold and if they don’t fit, they are labeled. Our virtual school allows us to work through lessons as quickly or slowly as needed. Sometimes the lessons are easy for one student, yet more difficult for another.
5.) The Ability to Integrate Our Faith into the Virtual School Curriculum
While I love having a curriculum provided and dedicated staff to teach my children, there are some aspects of our life that need to come from home. In our virtual world, we are able answer questions with our faith in mind. We get these questions a lot during science and social studies lessons. In a public school, the teachers are not allowed to bring the Christian faith into the classroom. As a Christian learning coach, I am able to supplement the curriculum with faith-based learning tools and biblical values.
There are as many different reasons that people choose to educate their children from home, as there are styles of homeschooling. The main thing to do is follow your heart and go where God leads you.
God Bless 🙂
